European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States
The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This row threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
