Approximately 50 automobiles have been marked with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German city of Hanau near Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.

Automobiles, building surfaces and postboxes were marked, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they announced in a statement.

Law enforcement state they were alerted during the night on Wednesday night, when a resident discovered that a automobile in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been marked with a reddish substance.

The substance had been applied in the form of a swastika, they stated.

Officers then located numerous other marked cars and residential walls in the surrounding area.

Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations outlawing the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.

Police state initial examinations suggest the substance was probably blood from a person.

"At present there remains no clue as to its source; authorities are currently not cognizant of any physical harm in association with the occurrence," they commented.

Local authorities stated they were trying "to unravel the case" and have appealed to the residents for information.

An important official commented the attack left him stunned and had to be resolved promptly.

"This incident strikes at the core of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the extremist violent incident half a decade ago," he stated on online, referring to the death of nine victims by a gunman targeting residents of migrant background in five years prior.
